Lohagad Fort: A Trek Through History, Caves, and Scenic Marvels

      Hello everyone!
This was my first visit to Lohagad and my first experience of trekking. As someone said, "Unplanned trips are the best ones", and that's exactly what happened to us.
The night before, my brother and I casually decided to go on this trek. The plan still needed to be finalized, but everything worked out, and I successfully completed my first trek! I felt excitement and nervousness initially but was thrilled to reach the top!
One of the best things about this trek is that two forts, Lohagad and Visapur, are located right next to each other, making it a double treat for visitors. However, climbing both forts on the same requires a lot of willpower and stamina. If you're adventurous or an experienced trekker, it's definitely doable!

Lohagad, also known as the Iron Fort, is one of the prominent hill forts in Maharashtra, India. The fort derives its name from its incredible strength and resilience. It stands unyielding against wind and rain and has remained intact for centuries.
Located close to the hill station of Lonavala and about 52km northwest of Pune, Lohagad is a popular destination for trekkers and history enthusiasts. The fort sits at an elevation of 1,033 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Sahyadri hills and lush greenery.
Historically, Lohagad played a significant role during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire.

Lohagad Fort serves as a natural divider between two rivers, Pawana and Indrayani. As I mentioned earlier, Visapur Fort is located right next to Lohagad, making it easily visible from the top. From this vantage point, you can also catch a glimpse of the Tung and Tikona forts, adding to the scenic beauty of the location.
What I loved the most about reaching the top of Lohagad was the breathtaking view and the refreshing breeze. Believe me, the climb is absolutely worth it! The sense of accomplishment and the serene atmosphere at the summit are beyond words, you truly have to experience it yourself to understand that feeling.

Main Attraction of Lohagad Fort:

1. 8-angle lake

2. Vinchu kata (Scorpion's Tail)

3. Mahadev temple

Vinchu Kata

Vinchu Kata is my personal favorite spot on Lohagad Fort. Also known as the Scorpion’s Sting due to its resemblance to a scorpion’s tail, this unique structure is located on the opposite side of the fort.

The entire stretch is adorned with lush green patches, making it an incredibly scenic and serene experience. There are two ways to reach the end of Vinchu Kata:

1. Trek Trail (Left Side): This is the safer and more accessible route.

    2. Rock Climb (Front Side): A challenging path that requires careful climbing. One wrong move, and you might find yourself in a tricky situation—definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Despite the effort, the reward at the bottom is unmatched. The views and the sense of accomplishment will leave you in awe.

Nearby Places to Visit:

  1. Visapur Fort – Located adjacent to Lohagad Fort, it offers a challenging trek and panoramic views.
  2. Tikona Fort – A triangular-shaped fort known for its unique design and historical significance.
  3. Tung Fort – A small hill fort offering breathtaking views of Pawna Lake and the surrounding hills.
  4. Navagraha Temples – A set of temples dedicated to the nine celestial planets, known for their spiritual ambiance.
  5. Karla Caves – Ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves with intricate carvings and a rich historical heritage.

Bhaja Caves

Located just 2 km from Malavli, once served as a home for Buddhist monks. The Bhaja Caves share architectural designs with the Karla Caves. These caves are a group of 22 rock-cut structures dating back to the 2nd century BC. What stands out the most about these caves is their unique architecture, the arrangement of rooms, and the breathtaking view from the top.

How to Reach Lohagad Fort from Mumbai:

By Train

The nearest railway station is Malavli. You can take suburban trains running between Pune and Lonavala to reach Malavli. Lonavala is another major railway station near Lohagad. Board any express train heading towards Pune.

By Road

Lohagad is accessible from Paud via Dudhiware Khind and Kolvan, or you can follow the Mumbai-Pune Highway to reach the fort.

From Lonavala/Malavli

There are two methods of reaching Lohagad Fort. One is by trekking from Malavli station towards the base of the stairs leading to Bhaje Caves, and then to the village of Lohgadwadi, which serves as the base for climbing Lohagad Fort. This trek takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.
The other option is to hire a taxi or auto from Lonavala station to Lohgadwadi village.

Difficulty Level

The Lohagad trek is considered an easy trek, suitable even for first-timers. All you need is strong willpower and good stamina.

What Will Be the Total Expense?

Lohagad trek is a budget-friendly one-day trek that does not require a high budget. The average total expense for the Lohagad trek is around ₹1100 per person (including meals and sightseeing).
Please note that the entrance fee for the fort and caves is charged separately (approx. ₹25 for Indian tourists).

Few Tips

■ It is best to visit during the monsoon or winter seasons. (Take extra care while climbing the fort during the rainy season, as the terrain can become slippery.)
■ Carry sufficient food and water.

Remember to respect the beauty of the place. Do not write names or mark the fort's walls, and avoid littering. These forts and caves are precious gifts from our ancestors, so let us do our part in preserving our cultural heritage.

I am confident this will be one of your best trekking experiences ever.

THANK YOU!
