BE THE CHANGE
Hello,
I hope you all are doing well. This blog is about some social work which I did recently.
On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 151th Birth Anniversary, I got the chance to do some small social contributions towards the work which our beloved Bapuji has taught us in his entire life which is Swachhata (Cleanliness). Mahatma Gandhi once said "Sanitation is more important than Independence.”
Cleanliness is really important for healthy environment and physical well-being of all living creatures. Therefore it is essential to learn about cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation. He stressed the fact that cleanliness promotes good health among people. To change the world’s perception about our country, it is very important to take steps towards good hygiene and cleanliness and for that first we have to change ourselves. In 2014, our respected Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi inaugurated the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'. In his guidance we all pledged "I shall not litter and won't allow anyone to do so." but many of us forgot that.
How I came to know about this initiative?
Gandhiji once said "So as long as you not take the broom and the bucket in your hands, you cannot make your towns and cities clean."
Therefore before telling and judging others, I have to start this great work from myself. And somehow on 30 September, I got mail from the 'United way Mumbai' that on 2nd October 2020 they have organized a volunteering beach cleanup drive. So I decided to go and be a part of it. They arranged this program on the occasion of 'International Coastal Cleanup Day' in collaboration with "Beach Please India".
About "United Way Mumbai” and "Beach Please India" organization:
"United Way Mumbai" is a non-profit organization, which is a part of more than 130 years old united way movement. They work with the network of more than 400 NGO's and corporates. This charity is doing such a great work to improve lives. They not only work for shores clean up but also for depleting mangroves, development of underprivileged children, flood disasters, malnourishment, road safety, fight against diabetes, hepatitis and covid-19 and livelihood opportunities for women. They are bringing huge changes in society.
And
"Beach Please" is a youth initiative to protect our oceans from marine debris in Mumbai, India.
Why it's important?
Every year world is dumping more than 14 billion pounds of garbage directly into the ocean and around 90% of it contains plastic. Mumbai is island city has 114 km of coastline and our beaches are major tourist attractions.
How this litter affects us?
14 Billion! It’s a huge number. Just imagine getting 14 Billion pound of garbage dumped in your house or the streets on which you go to your college, office or to buy vegetables. It won’t be good for our health, isn’t it?
But do you know world is dumping all this 14 Billion Pound of Garbage into ocean where marine life does exists. Think how harmful it is for them. Also to save our planet it's important to clean our oceans because ocean covers about 70% of the Earth surface. Half of the world's oxygen comes from the ocean and it also absorbs 50% CO2 produced by Humans.
After all we are tied to the ocean.
What we did?
On 2nd of October at around 7am we gathered at Dadar beach and we cleaned some small patch of beach. There were around 30 to 40 who came forward for self-volunteering. From 7am to 9am we collected all the solid waste from the shore and disposed it properly. Considering Corona pandemic we did maintain social distancing and followed all the norms given by the Government and Mumbai Police.
Looking forward to attain more clean-up drive and pay more social contribution.
I know this is not a huge thing or a big victory, but at least concern and awareness behind doing this is what matters. Just by saying 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' , things are not going to change. This city, this country is our and we have to change ourselves to make a change. We are a part of this nation and it's our duty to do so. Therefore it's my humble request to you all, if you get any opportunity for welfare of our country and planet, don't lose it, because this is how we can bring change and make this world a beautiful place.
“BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD”: Mahatma Gandhi.
Is there any other good way to pay tribute to father of our nation?
